Mike has been employed within the industry for over 25 years starting his employment with Hargreaves Quarries followed by RMC and more latterly CEMEX. Over his time in the industry Mike has managed Asphalt plants, Concrete Units and Quarries not only in the UK but also the UAE ending his time as Regional Operations Manager for the North East of the UK.
Mike started with the Institute in January 2008 where he took on the role as General Manager. He actively took part in many industry committees and groups such as the Mineral Products Qualifications Council, Training and Education committee, Qualifications Reform Group and was an active member of Council. He is an extremely active member or the Quarries National Joint Advisory Committee which within this chairs the Communications Sub Group charged with disseminating information to the wider industry.
Mike was also the site manager Hillhead – International Quarry Exhibition (2008-14) and held significant responsibility for the show as well as part of a team responsible for the planning and delivery of the event which attracts over 17,000 visitors on a biannual basis.
Roy has been in quarrying all his working life (over 40 years). Starting as a laboratory technician in an aggregates testing laboratory followed by time spent in a commercial role prior to moving into profit responsible quarry and area management.
He has experience in management of both sand & gravel and hard rock quarries at both site and area management levels. Spending a total of 18 years working within the industry
From 1993 to 2017 he worked for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the capacity of HM Inspector of Quarries. Up to 2008 he was an operational inspector carrying out physical inspections at quarry sites (which included taking appropriate enforcement action where necessary) and has held positions in the HSE’s metals and minerals manufacturing sector and latterly, the National Quarries Team (NQT) advising on and devising National Policy on interventions with the quarrying industry and providing specialist assistance for legal purposes. Roy also provided the Secretariat for the Quarries National Joint Advisory Committee (QNJAC) while it was Chaired by HSE as well as sitting on many of the QNJAC’s Working Groups representing HSE.
